"Get On It!"

The Chevy HHR I Would Buy

by motorfoot 3/4/2008 11:37:00 AM

When the HHR first came out I wasn't interested. In picture form, it didn't look very attractive to me. As they started to appear on the street I found the car looked ok, but still not interested.

As gas prices started climbing and my daily driver was geting older I started thinking about options.

Enter the HHR SS.

The HHR SS has improved suspension, 18 inch wheels, and a turbocharged engine that grunts out 260 hp/lb-ft. That's 55 more ponies than the standard engine! Sir, you have my attention!

But then.

I found out the engine was detuned to 235 hp for the automat version so it wouldn't destroy the fragile four speed automatic trans. Dang.

What If Mode.

I like trucks. What if Chevy chopped the HHR into son of SSR? Now that's interesting. They could offer (1) the standard HHR, (2) the Panel version (coming in June 08), and (3) the son of SSR Truck version. And throw in a beefy five speed paddle shift automatic just for me.

Back to Article...

If you are interested in the new SS version of the HHR, you might wait because further enhancements, such as Brembo brakes, larger rotors, and limited-slip differential, will come in the Spring. As for me, it's a compelling package for a daily driver, but I'm not going to buy it because Chevy chose not to equip it with a sturdy automatic. Bring back the freakin S10. My search continues.
